Features of a photo session on a yacht. Etiquette on board
Sailing on river Dnipro is popular for bachelorette parties, birthdays or special occasions. Still, in addition to skiing, photo shoots near yachts are also popular. Let’s talk about how to make session comfortable for everyone.
How to arrange a photo, video shooting on a yacht?
If you are already at club, where there is open access to boats, then you can try to find a representative of the owner of the boat through other yachtsmen or contact the administration of the yacht-club. If you were refused, don’t worry, on Bimbarent you can find boats that you can rent for photography. Such a rental is called “without leaving the marina” and it is usually 3-5 cheaper than a classic trip, since the boat remains moored.

Is it possible to be photographed against the backdrop of boats without permission?
If this is an open marina without fences and combination locks, of course, you can. It would be unethical to enter the deck of a yacht without the permission of the owner.
The yacht club has refused you?
If you have permission from the owner’s representative, someone will met you.

What is allowed at a photo shoot?
Each owner sets his own rules. The main thing is not to break or scratch anything. Next, we will tell you what we usually allows.

You can session at all levels of the yacht: flybridge, bow, stern, saloon, galley, guest bedrooms, latrine. Light alcohol is allowed on site (champagne, cava, white wine). Models should not be wearing heels, shoes with non-marking soles are allowed. Photographers and cameramen are allowed without tripods (lighting devices will have to be kept in hand). The number of people on board depends on the size of the vessel.
We have a photo session for an hour, what can we do?
Often guests try to shoot a professional session for 1 hour. This is quite possible if you prepare all the outfits & props for the model in advance, also photographic equipment does not require lengthy settings. Our experience shows that the best option for a classic portrait session is 2 hours. A one-hour is suitable for those who take on a mobile phone and allocate no more than 20 minutes for 1 outfit.

Posing ideas on a yacht: how to become an Instagram star
Don’t pay attention to the camera
We know, it’s easy to say, but the best way to take a natural and relaxed picture of yourself during a photo shoot is to ignore the camera lens. Try posing looking off into the distance as if you were holding a camera either phone lens.

Where should I put my hands?
This is the most common question when posing on a boat – girls and boys don’t know where to put their hands. The main rule is to keep your arms relaxed, not clenched into fists. How to show them naturally & beautifully? Here are some ideas:
- Put your them on your hips, either in front of you;
- Keep your hands in front of you;
- Adjust your hair, glasses, hat, blazer;
- Cover your face from the sun;
- Raise them up;
- Lean on some surface of the yacht and put one hand under your chin;
- Take an object in your hands: flowers, a bottle of water, beer or a glass of prosecco, a purse, a towel, binoculars, a spinning rod, food, etc. Anything.
If you are often nervous before shooting, it will be useful to practice in front of a mirror.

Add movement to the shot
Another great tip for shooting is to add movement. Walk on deck, jump on the bow or stern, spin around, have fun. Movement always makes people laugh, which looks great on social media. Some ideas for movement in the frame:
- Walk toward the camera or your phone, smiling – looking away.
- Move away from the photographer and look left-right.
Another important point
Avoid clutter on the yacht. Boats are full of various small objects that create a general mess in the photo, distracting from the main subject – you. Simplify the picture. Make the clutter “disappear” in the final shot. How do you do this? Move closer to the model or remove unnecessary objects from the frame.

5 simple tips for shooting with your phone
Shoot as is, enlarge later
To maximize image quality, it’s recommended that you don’t crop (enlarge) the image as you shoot. If possible, get close to the model or subject. The detail of the image can be improved after with AI.

Check the focus, adjust the exposure
Many people put too much trust in automatic settings. Yes, automatics are pretty good when any result will do. To convey a specific story in your photo, choose your subject in focus and exposure settings. On iPhone that sun icon will appear next to the focus area. On Android, a light bulb icon.
Working with the foreground
While the main subject – such as a model – is undoubtedly the main element of a photograph, a well-crafted foreground takes portrait photography to a new level. Working with the foreground adds a sense of depth to the shot, telling more of a story within the frame.
Flip your phone over
The best way to change the angle when shooting from the water is to flip your phone upside down and bring the camera as close to the surface as possible. This trick works on deck as well as on the stern – bow of the boat.

Long exposure
In the evening & at night, long exposures can turn boring photos into works of art – stars turn into blurry circles, fireworks into blurry dangling macaroons. This artistic blurriness will give the photo a dynamic feel.
