Planned & periodic maintenance of the aircraft and helicopter: terms, procedures, list of works

Aircraft maintenance increases not only the safety of the flight itself, but also the airworthiness potential. Let’s look at what activities are carried out as part of aircraft and helicopter servicing.

Aircraft maintenance

There are several groups of checks. Let’s start with the Daily Check. This is a daily technical check of the aircraft, which is carried out at night on scheduled routes. General diagnostics of the state of power units and assemblies is made, visible defects are fixed, the level of liquids is checked, emergency equipment is inspected. Other checks are performed in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Weekly Check:

• testing of on-board electronics, external and internal lights.
• diagnostics of the skin, serviceability of internal units, chassis, generator;
• checking the level of liquids, if necessary – replenishing, either replacing them;

Every X hours, maintenance is carried out – check “A”. The cost of a standard hour, for example for Cessna-172, is 20$ in Ukraine. What is included:

• visual inspection of the fuselage to identify visible defects, corrosion;
• checking the operation of hydraulics, brake systems;
• the flap position control system.
• air conditioning systems;
• lighting equipment;

Then, once every 6 months for regular flights, maintenance “B” is done. Once every 2 years, a comprehensive diagnostics and repair of units is carried out – named as “C”. Every five years, worn, defective parts are replaced – “D” overhaul.

Helicopter servicing

It is carried out either according to the number of “worked” hours, or according to the calendar plan. For example, for Robinson light helicopters, overhaul can be called in after 2200 hours of operation of the nodes, either if the helicopter is idle all the time, then once every 12 years. By the way, after scheduled maintenance, receives an extension of its licence to fly.

What is included in the maintenance-check:

• diagnostics of electronic equipment, troubleshooting.
• diagnostics of internal units;
• replacement of defective and worn parts;
• oil level control, if necessary – replacement;
• replacement of working fluid in hydraulics;
• adjustment of fastening systems;
